 Like schools in many English-speaking countries, Hogwarts uses the House system. The student body of Hogwarts is divided into four Houses, each named after the witch or wizard who founded it. Because students spend nearly all their time at school with fellow members of their own house, house placement determines of the students' Hogwarts experience. - Gryffindor, symbolized by the lion, characterized by valor and courage, founded by Godric Gryffindor. Its colors are red and gold.
- Hufflepuff, symbolized by the badger, characterized by loyalty and a hard work ethic, founded by Helga Hufflepuff. Its colors are yellow and black.
- Ravenclaw, symbolized by the eagle, characterized by wit and intellect, founded by Rowena Ravenclaw. Its colors are blue and bronze.
- Slytherin, symbolized by the serpent, characterized by ambition and cunning, founded by Salazar Slytherin. Its colors are green and silver.
